I'm trying to dye shopping bag material (looks like netting). Since there is no grey available for polyester can I just soak the fabric for less time until it looks the right color?

Most black dyes lean toward one color space or another. iDye Poly Black, in particular, leans toward green. So, if the dye bath isn't hot enough, the dye concentration isn't high enough or the fabric isn't in the dye bath long enough then the fabric can end up with a green tone.

So, there isn't an easy way to achieve a grey with the iDye Poly Black. You might consider a flowable paint such as Dye-Na-Flow or our Jacquard Airbrush Colors instead. Whatever product you choose, you'll want to make sure that the fabric hasn't been treated with any coatings such as waterproofing, fire retardant, stain fighters, etc. as these can block dye from absorbing and paint for fixing.
