I am very interested in achieving a "Tie-Dye" effect on garments that are made of 92% nylon and 8% spandex. My research has led me to acid dyes. I know that acid dyes are intended for tub dying. However, I was wondering if I could mix the dye as though I were silk painting, then apply it in larger amounts similar to tie-dying, and then steam set the garment to bring out the color. In my head this seems to make sense, but I understand that I am trying to use something for a purpose other than it is intended. I just wanted to know if anyone had any experience or thoughts regarding this matter. Thanks.

The method you described should work as the dyes require heat to set them... do a test first.
